Natural Science and Materials Science

Both natural scientific degree courses, Chemistry and Physics/Physical Technologies, have been integrated with materials science degree courses and are now grouped in the new Faculty of Natural Science and Materials Science. This linkage within a single organizational unit is meant to promote cross-disciplinary educational training as well as interdisciplinary interaction in research.

Engineering science degree courses in materials science have been integrated in the new Bachelor course Materials Science and Engineering. This first-step degree course provides a foundation for both the more scientific Master's in Materials Science and the technology-oriented Master's in Materials Engineering.

The degree course in chemistry has already for several years permitted a choice between the Diplom degree and the Bachelor/Master program. Both of these are internationally comparable qualifications. An even stronger modularization of individual stages of study will be successively implemented. At second-step study students may choose to specialize in the following areas: polymer chemistry, environmental chemistry, economic chemistry, or construction chemistry.

The degree course Physics/Physical Technologies is a full-fledged program of training that leads to the qualification Diplom physicist. A special accent is set by including business administration, law and engineering lectures to the curriculum. At second-step study, there is a choice between either a purely physical science subject matter and an interdisciplinary focus, with specialization in combination with an engineering subject matter.
